Plaster, drywall, spackled areas, composition board, galvanized metal, plywood, stucco, wood siding, and vinyl surfaces require different preparation for painting.  Even previously painted surfaces may require different preparations when painting over with a different type of paint - e.g., flat over gloss or paint over varnish.
